One quick thought in reaction to a detail - while incorrect, many associate Mac with Scotland/Protestantism and Mc with Ireland/Catholicism. Maybe something there, given the context and the group orientation?
Thanks, Amy, that's a good point. I'd love to have more insight on that in this case. One central figure in my research was born Catholic and presented as Protestant in order to make the team. I'll review the older sources to see if it changes for Rev Mac at some point, but his brother was always Mc it seems.
